How to Protect Your Floors During the Holidays

When the holiday season is here, there is always a lot of work and preparation to do. Shopping, presents, and cooking, oh my!

One thing you may be overlooking though is preparing your floors for the holiday season.

Taking care of the floors is not the first job that comes to mind for the holidays, but that doesn’t mean it’s not beneficial.

With the holidays comes visitors, foot traffic, snow, slush, and lots of potential wear and tear. The cost of refinishing hardwood floors or replacing your carpet does not come cheap.

Save yourself some money down the line and try to protect your floors now.

Tips to Prepare your home floors for the holiday seasons:

The Front Door – The major threat to the floors during winter is the mix of dirt and snow that can make the entrance of the house slippery. Many homeowners use rock salt to make their entrance less slippery but these can stick up to the shoes of the visitors and spread all over the house. Rock salt is made of a material that can dull the color of the floor as the time goes by. It can also scratch your floors. Having a no shoes in the house policy can reduce the chances of damaging your floor.

Turn down the heat – Everyone wants a warm home. However, the excessive use of heater can dry your hardwood and lead to a shrinkage and cracks on the floor. To keep the house warm without cracking your hardwood floors, use a humidifier to keep the moisture in the air.

Clean quick and often – When people don’t take off shoes, or holiday drinks end up on the floor, make sure it gets cleaned right away. Keep a “cleaning kit” handy: a roll of paper towels, a microfiber cloth, and a spray bottle of carpet or floor cleaner. Keep the floors swept or vacuumed so all those salt crystals and debris get cleaned up right away

Related post: KEEPING YOUR HOME CLEAN AND GERM-FREE DURING WINTER

Protect your floor from Christmas tree – Water spilling out from your real tree stand can be bad for the floor. If you spill, clean it up as soon as possible. You can also try putting a plastic bag under your tree to catch the water and then cover it with your Christmas tree slip so no one sees it.

As for salt, sand, and other debris, frequent cleaning of hardwoods and laminates with a neutral floor cleaner will help protect against salt buildup. In high traffic areas, it is recommended sweeping daily and mopping once or twice a week.

Have a great holiday and protect your floors!

How to Remove Paint from Carpet

Image result for paint drops on carpet

There are very good chances to stain your carpet when you live with children. It can be very overwhelming to have those spots on the carpet. Sometimes stains can be hard to remove.

It is not difficult to remove those stains, here are some useful tips for your carpet:

1. Always avoid using chemical on the carpet because there is always the risk of staining the carpet, testing before use is recommended.

2. Two most important things to inspect before getting started are if the paint is wet or dry or what kind of a paint it is (water-based paint (the easiest to remove), acrylic paint, latex paint or oil based paint (the most difficult to remove

3. There are some ways you can use to remove a different kind of paints from the carpet

  • Wet Paint – If you encounter the wet paint on the carpet use a dry cloth and blot the stain and avoid rubbing.
  • Dry Paint – If the pain is dry the finest way to remove the stain is by using the hot water with some addition of the detergent (mild soap). This will help to soften the paint and once its unstiffen use the knife and remove it gently.
  • Acrylic Paint – Use a dry paper with glycerin on the paint spill. Glycerin is one of the best solvents.
  • Latex Paint – latex paint is a liquid based paint that can be removed by using water mixed with one teaspoon of neutral detergent. Oil Based Paint – Oil paint is the most challenging type of paint to remove from carpet. You will need a strong cleaning agent such as WD-40. (By the way, WD-40 is a great miracle product to have on hand as it can be used for a lot of problems around the house. Also, you’ll want to have a putty knife on handy and maybe even a razor blade or other sharp knife and a tweezer.

8 Reasons to Clean Carpets Before Winter

Clean your carpets BEFORE winter?

Shouldn’t you be waiting until after winter to get your carpets cleaned?

They’re only going to get dirty with dirt and mud anyway.

While it’s true that your carpeting is likely to get dirty during the snowy and slushy winter months, that doesn’t mean you should just do nothing and let them get even dirtier.

Carpet CleaningThere are many advantages to getting your carpet cleaning done before the first snow falls. In this post, we’ll review the benefits of getting carpet cleaning done before then.

1. Holiday guests – Even if you’re not having a gathering at your house, you still may have those cousins you haven’t seen in 12 years stop by. Neighbors and friends will be dropping by too.

2. Sanitation – Cleaning your carpets before/during the winter months can benefit your health as your air will be cleaner. You’ll be spending most of the winter indoors and “everyone” gets sick this time of year. Anything you can do for your health is a plus.

3. Clean out summer pollutants – Do you really want all those pollen spores, pet dander and bacteria from your windows being open throughout the summer sealed up in your home for the winter?

4. Extend carpet life – Routine deep cleaning increases the longevity of your carpeting, saving you money in the long run, and who doesn’t like saving money?!

5. Longer lasting clean – It may be hard to believe, but your carpets stay cleaner for longer in the winter due to less foot traffic.

6. Drying Time – When you factor in less humidity and that you will obviously have your heat running, your carpets will dry quicker.

7. Simplify your spring routine – You know once spring rolls around, you’ll be getting your house ready for the summer, why not make it one less step?

8. Company availability – Most people typically get their carpets cleaned in the spring months, so why not get them done when the schedule is more flexible.

Tips to Clean Your House Faster Than Ever

Tips for Cleaning you house faster

Don’t spend a whole day cleaning your home! Use these tricks to clean faster and save yourself time to relax on your weekend instead.

15 Tips to Clean Faster

  • Have a System
  • Clean Top to Bottom, Left to Right
  • Squeegee Windows for a Streak-Free Finish
  • Keep Proper Tools at the Ready
  • Get Proactive
  • Dust Without Spraying
  • Cut through Kitchen Grease
  • Use Lemon Cleaner
  • Keep Bathroom Mold in Check
  • Remove Mineral Deposits
  • Keep Stainless-Steel Shining
  • Use Magic Eraser Sponges
  • Keeping Your Microwave Clean
  • Vacuum In Rows
  • Speed Clean On A Regular Schedule

Have a System

Cutting your cleaning time in half starts with a having a system. When you have a defined plan, it becomes easier to stay on track. Your plan should include something along the lines of cleaning the house in the same order every time. Working one room at a time, starting and finishing at the same spot in a room so that you don’t waste time running back and forth.

Do the same thing every time you clean, so it is a routine. The routine is the method, and that is an inherently better way to clean because the speed comes from the method instead of from hurrying. You can clean your house in half the time, it’s not a gimmick.

Clean Top to Bottom, Left to Right

Part of your system will include cleaning in an order that doesn’t create more work for yourself. Don’t start a room by wiping the coffee table, then clean the blinds, because you will see the dust from the blinds coat your newly clean coffee table. Start at the top of the room, such as dusting a ceiling fan, and then work down to the floor to eliminate redundant work.

Cleaning left to right ensures that you cover the entire room instead of darting from place to place.

If you work top to bottom and left to right, you’re working once instead of cleaning areas you’ve just cleaned.

Squeegee Windows for a Streak-Free Finish

When Windex and paper towels aren’t getting the shine you prefer, use a professional-grade window squeegee. Place a drop of dish soap in a gallon of water and wipe the window with a cloth, then squeegee it off. Go top to bottom and wipe the blade each time at the bottom. A streak free window is what you will achieve.

If you don’t want to use a squeegee, use a glass cleaner and a microfiber cloth. When wiping with the cloth, use horizontal strokes and move from top to bottom. Don’t clean a window by rubbing in circles, which can leave streaks, and avoid wiping the glass with newspaper or paper towels, which leave a residue.

Keep Proper Tools at the Ready

Have all the tools and cleaning products you need ready at the start and within arms-reach so you never waste time walking back and forth to the cabinet under the sink. This might be hard with several large bottles of cleaner, but you don’t need large bottles—pour the cleaners into small spray bottles that are easy to carry. You can also place your supplies in a caddy or a bucket to stay organized and save time.

Related: Types of carpet bacteria

Get Proactive

The best way to keep a clean home is to stop some problems before they begin. For example, use a shower cleaner, which costs less than $4 for a trigger bottle, to prevent grime and scum buildup in the bath. Spraying it on and walking away, every time you take a shower, will prevent the shower from getting dirty. You don’t have to wipe anything.

Dust Without Spraying

Use feather dusters for cleaning blinds, pictures, nooks, and other areas. Try using ostrich feather dusters, which start at about $10, because the feathers tackle the dust and the large quills don’t fall out of the handle. You want a high-quality feather duster that will fit in your back pocket. The duster works well for routine dusting, but for heavy buildup, you’ll need to vacuum or use a cloth, then use the duster every two weeks or so after that.

Related: Keep carpet looking new

Cut through Kitchen Grease

Grease will end up on kitchen cabinets, especially those above or next to the range. Buying a cleaner with orange oil to wipe off the grease is one option, or you can use a standard grease-cutting dishwashing detergent. Cutting through the grease, the detergent will clean the cabinets the same way that it will eliminate grease on your dishes.

Mix one tablespoon of liquid detergent into a gallon of warm water. Test the solution in an inconspicuous area, wiping it on with a clean sponge or cloth, to make sure it won’t damage or discolor the finish. Finish by rinsing it off with a different sponge and clear, warm water.

Build up and tougher stains that won’t come off with detergent, you can mix baking soda with water, and lightly scrub the problem area with a cloth.

Lemon Cleaner

If you have rust stains on patios, porches, garage floors, ( and driveways are eyesores ), you don’t need acid to remove them. Instead, the juice of a lemon will do wonders.  The rust will be dissolved by the lemon juice. Cutting the lemon in half, and squeezing the juice onto the stain, and allowing it to soak in for about 10 minutes will remove most stains. For stains on concrete that have been on there for weeks, months, or longer, scrubbing with a hard bristle brush will do the trick. Finish by rinsing the lemon juice and gunk with clean water.

Keep Bathroom Mold in Check

Hydrogen peroxide in a trigger spray bottle can be used to battle mold and mildew. Spraying the surface, and letting it sit for 3 to 5 minutes will kill the fungus.

To prevent mold from coming back, use a fan when showering. When you’re done, squeegee the water off the tile walls and shower door.

Remove Mineral Deposits

If mineral deposits from hard water have stained your plumbing fixtures, don’t clean them with bristle brushes or pads. They can scratch the faucet. Instead, use white vinegar. Pour some on a clean cloth and wipe the faucets. It doesn’t take much effort to make them sparkle.

Keep Stainless-Steel Shining

Enemies of stainless-steel sinks and surfaces are fingerprints, smudges, and water marks. Using mineral oil can help defeat this issue. Pour some mineral oil on a cloth and wipe it down once a week.

Doing this will repel the water. Mineral oil also helps keep toothpaste and other items from sticking to the sink, making it easier to wipe clean.

Use Magic Eraser Sponges

Mr. Clean Magic Erasers cost about $4 for a pack of four.

They remove stains, unlike other normal sponges. Keep them in your collection of cleaning supplies.

They’re ideal for cleaning walls, and most other surfaces, including wood, laminate, and tile.

Keeping Your Microwave Clean

The inside of your microwave collects baked-on food, especially if it has been sitting for days or longer. This issue can be tough to resolve.

Here’s a trick: Make the microwave work for you. Take a coffee cup full of water in the microwave and heat it up until it’s boiling hot. This will create moisture that loosens up anything on the top, sides, or bottom of the microwave.

Then take a damp cloth and wipe the surfaces clean.

Vacuum In Rows

One secret to effective and efficient vacuuming: Do the entire length of the room in a straight row, then move over and start again at the front of the room.

Vacuuming high-traffic areas once a week will keep deep cleaning to a minimal.

Vacuum in long rows, and then back out of the room.

You can do it fast, and put the cord over your shoulder so you’re not fighting it.

Speed Clean On A Regular Schedule

Cutting down on cleaning time consists of cleaning more often, actually.

Once the deep clean is completed, you’ll need to give it a once-over every couple weeks.

This keeps the place looking nice, and minimizes the extensive cleaning. Maintenance cleaning instead of catch-up cleaning is the idea.

How to Keep New Carpet Looking New

Posted on July 27, 2017 at 10:02 pm | Written by Green T

In this post we will review what you need to do for a long lasting and fresh looking carpet.

What damages your carpet?
Carpet Stain

Your carpet will get the most wear and tear where there is the most traffic. Well-traveled areas, such as staircases, entryways, and in front of couches and chairs will show damage sooner than less used parts of the room.

If your room layout allows it, try to move your furniture around on a regular basis. You can prevent premature wear on your carpet by moving your furniture around once every six months. You can also lay down rugs or carpet runners to take the brunt of the damage. This will not only protect your carpet from wear but they can keep dirt out as well.

If you’re having carpet installed consider investing in a heavy underlay to help prevent damage.

What about carpet sprays?

A common sign that you have carpet damage is when you start to get a musty smell. Things like dirt, pollen, and dander tend to find their way into the carpet, giving off a sour that just won’t go away even when vacuumed. You can help get rid of the smell using air fresheners but this is only a temporary solution.

Related:Myths and Facts About Carpet Cleaning

Carpet powders are also a popular way to eliminate those carpet odors. Be careful because overuse of carpet powder can leave residue on the carpet. You might not see the residue until you have your carpet steam cleaned or shampooed and then you will be left with white, sometimes sticky, film on top of your carpet. It is important to only use carpet powder sparingly.

Vacuum Regularly
carpet kid

Taking care of your carpet means you need to vacuum on a regular basis. When dirt and dust are left on your carpet it can damage the fibers and change the way your carpet looks. Vacuuming removes these particles before they can do damage, keeping your carpet from looking dull and dingy.

Make sure your vacuum is in good working condition before you start. The bag should be less than half full, have a tight belt, and clean brushes. You should vacuum two to three times a week.

Take care of those spills

Spills, if left untreated, can quickly become stains. The best way to keep your carpet looking new is to deal with any spills as soon as it happens so it won’t have time to set in. Carpeting is a delicate fabric, always blot gently to remove a spill, never rub or scrub. You may need to apply a little spotting solution and blot gently, the process may need to be repeated two or three times. Never over-wet a carpet.

How to take care of set in stains

Sometimes a spill may go unnoticed or it may not be possible to deal with immediately. If it’s food-based or another organic stain that’s started to smell, you can use cold water and detergent to start breaking it down. Soak up as much of the water as possible and let it dry, then apply baking soda and let it sit overnight to pull up as much of the stain as possible. You can use commercial spot/stain removers but be cautious as they are powerful and can damage your carpet if too much is used.

Professional cleaning
carpet cleaner

While keeping your carpet looking new by yourself is achievable it can be beneficial to hire a professional. Professionals use high-power steam cleaning machines or high-performance dry cleaning chemicals to deep clean your carpets.

Related: Disadvantages of DIY Carpet Cleaning

It’s important if you are hiring a professional, to not wait until you see dirt or damage. It is recommended to have a professional cleaning every six to twelve months, even if it looks like your carpet doesn’t need to be cleaned.

How to Clean Different Types of Floors

Posted on July 11, 2017 at 2:59 pm | Written by Green T

How to clean different types of floors

If it’s hardwood, linoleum, bamboo, vinyl, cork, tile or laminate, here’s a few easy ways to keep your floor looking new and clean.

How to clean laminate floorsLaminate Flooring

Very few things will harm laminate floors. After all, planks are constructed in sun and light resistant layers to keep that new look for years. You need to maintain them as a laminate material, even though they resemble hardwood planks or natural stone tile.

Keeping water from getting beneath the planks is very important. Dry mop, and vacuum on tile setting (instead of carpet).

Use a damp mop or wet Swiffer when needed. Never polish a laminate floor, if the surface looks damaged, it’s best to replace it.

How to clean cork floorsCork Flooring

Most absorbent cork flooring is sealed, but you still need to proceed with caution. Vacuum often so scratches don’t appear, wipe spills immediately, and clean once a week.

Use a vinegar, soap and water solution instead of commercial cleaners. In a spray bottle, mix 1/4 cup vinegar, 1 drop dish soap and fill with warm water. To disinfect, reduce build-up, and break down dirt, naturally acidic vinegar is very effective. Spray a section at a time, wiping with a damp microfiber mop as you move across the floor.

How to clean hardwood floorsHardwood Flooing

Polyurethane and wax are two finishes typically used for hardwood floors. Sealed wood floors usually have a urethane, polyurethane or polyacrylic coating. Stains and water damage are minimized.

A solution of 1/4 cup mild or pH-neutral soap in a bucket of water will work for cleaning. Stay away from acidic vinegar solutions, which will dull the wood over time. Damp mop, using a dry microfiber cloth to remove any excess moisture.

High traffic areas like kitchens should be cleaned once a week; once a month for lower traffic areas. For waxed floors, do not use any moisture whatsoever. Instead, sweep, dust mop and vacuum regularly.

Related: Caring For Your Hardwood Floors

How to clean bamboo floorsBamboo Flooring

Bamboo is beautiful and sustainable, but also softer, and more prone to nicks and scratches than hardwood floors. If you have strand bamboo flooring, which is the hardest, most durable flooring type, then you need only to sweep and dry mop. If you have other types, you will need to make sure to regularly sweep up dirt and debris to avoid scratching.

You can use the same solution as hardwood floors, 1/4 cup mild or pH-neutral soap in a bucket of water. Clean with a barely damp mop, wiping excess moisture with a dry microfiber cloth.

How to clean vinyl floorsVinyl Flooring

To keep vinyl looking fresh and new, use a spray bottle with a solution of 1/4 cup vinegar, 1 drop of dish soap and warm water. Spritz and dry mop once a week. Working in a section at a time, working your way across the entire surface.

For deep cleans as needed, you can use a steam cleaner to clean grout and tile. The steam removes bacteria and stains.

How to clean natural stone floors

Do not use vinegar to clean stone tiles. Bleach and ammonia can damage floors, as well as an acidic liquid solution. Mop floors using a pH-neutral, non chelating cleaner that won’t react adversely to minerals in the natural surface. Mop with a microfiber mop and hot water if the stone tiles are unsealed; the chemicals will penetrate the stone. If needed, a steam cleaner may be used.

The Myths and Facts about Carpet Cleaning

Posted on May 16, 2017 at 2:02 pm | Written by Green T

With many products, carpet cleaning methods, and carpet cleaning professionals out there it is easy to receive contradicting information.

This can make things overwhelming and confused carpet owners, but it doesn’t have to be that way.

Since it is necessary that you get the facts straight, we want to share a couple of myths and facts about carpet cleaning, that we at Green T feel everyone should know!

Fact: Professional Carpet Cleaning Helps to Increase the Longevity of your Carpets.Carpet Cleaning Facts

You should have your carpet professionally cleaned at least once a year in order to keep your carpets looking new.

This includes newer carpets that don’t seem all that filthy on the surface. Many carpet owners don’t consider professional carpet care until cleaning is long past overdue.

Just because there are no visible stains or spots, it doesn’t mean that there isn’t any build up of dirt and debris. The dirt can quickly accumulate deep in the carpet and cause damage that causes the carpet to begin internally decaying.

Myth: Wait as Long as You Can Before Having Your Carpet professionally Cleaned.

There are so many things wrong with that statement. Waiting until your carpet is visually dirty or in need of some serious cleaning to get professional help is a terrible decision.

If you wait until your carpet is excessively dirty to have it professionally cleaned it may be too late for some areas. Dirt and stains may be efficiently removed by certain professional cleaning methods done in a timely manner.

Wear and decay caused by the lack of deep cleaning can have irreversible effects on your carpet.

Fact: You Need to Have the Carpet Professionally Clean More Often Than you Think.

Extreme care and precaution may help ward off stains or spots for a while, but dirt and filth will still build up. The best thing to do is to have the carpet professionally cleaned at least once a year.

High traffic areas, such as entryways, require cleaning more frequently than once a year to keep it in good shape. Hiring a professional carpet cleaning service is a great way to start taking better care of your carpets. Do not wait until your carpet looks like it needs a professional clean. Start taking care of your carpet and maintaining it with professional help so that it stays in good conditions for a long time.

Carpet CleaningMyth: Vacuuming Too Much can Wear out the Carpet.

Nothing could be further than the truth.

Studies prove that there is no wear caused by vacuuming your carpet extensively. These studies show that even vacuuming several times a week causes no more damage than vacuuming twice a month.

Fact: Regular Vacuuming is a Necessary Part of Carpet Maintenance and Care.

Although vacuuming does in no way affect or wear out your carpet, not doing so can lead to premature carpet deterioration.

If you do not constantly (like once or twice a week) vacuum the dirt and other debris that builds up will be what wears out the carpet.

Myth #3: Pick the Cheapest Carpet Cleaning Service that you find.

Really? Has going cheap on anything been cost effective down the road? No, chances are you will be paying for it again sooner rather than later.

Many times, certain methods that are a lot cheaper tend to be inefficient and counterproductive because of the residues they leave behind.

Fact: Being informed on Cleaning Methods and Choosing the Right One, Can Really Pay Off.

In order to truly make better choices for your carpet, it is important that you be well informed. You should first look for a safe and efficient carpet cleaning method. Then you can go ahead and look up professionals that work in your area and that use these more advanced and effective methods. Tile and Grout Cleaning Tips

Posted on April 19, 2017 at 3:25 pm | Written by Green T

While tile is beautiful, durable, and typically easy to clean, grout can be another story. Its porous nature and location tend to make it a bit more of a challenge to maintain. Check out these handy tips to make the task a bit less painful!

Mild Soap and Warm Water

Mild soap and warm water will always be your best friends when it comes to spots and spills on tile and grout. It’s not always necessary to pluck a cleaning product off the shelf for the care of your hard surfaces, as these products can cause build-up and start to deteriorate the surface and grout lines around it.

Soap and water make for gentle and effective cleaning agents, and best of all they’re affordable.

Avoided Added Shine

Don’t use products that say that they’ll add shine to your surfaces. These products contain wax-like substances, and the wax will build up over time on your surface, giving it a dark and dingy appearance. The wax would need to be completely stripped away in order to restore your surface to it’s natural, beautiful appearance.

  • Regularly: Wipe down your counter tops with mild soap and water to prevent build-up.
  • Promptly: Wipe up any spills on your hard surfaces to prevent stains or scratches.

We know this sounds crazy and you’re itching to tackle it immediately but resist the urge, please! You’ll thank us later for the tip.

When you let the mud dry it is far easier to remove from the carpet; scrubbing the mud will push the mud further into your carpet fibers. If you can’t resist the urge or the mud it just too wet, your can blot it semi-dry to remove the excess water.

Step 2: Once the mud is completely dry, slowly vacuum the area to remove any excess dirt.

Slowly vacuuming removes more dirt, and vacuuming longer than you normally would and going in all directions is also more beneficial. The longer you spend vacuum the area the better the chance you have at removing all the mud.

Step 3: After removing as much dirt as possible while vacuuming, it’s time to break out the good stuff, and were talking about your dish soap!

Mix one teaspoon of your dish soap to one cup of lukewarm water. Make more if you need it.

Step 4: Grab a white cloth, so you watch the stain lift right out of your carpet fibers.

Blot the solution you made in step three onto the carpet. You’ll want to continue blotting the stain until the stain is all gone.

Step 5: Gently blot the newly cleaned area with a clean dry cloth or paper towels.
